Why SIPS?

Why choose Murus SIPs over 2x stud framing?

In the 1830's, a breakthrough in building technology revolutionized the residential construction industry. The Industrial Revolution allowed items like nails and dimensional lumber to be mass-produced in factories and mills at great reductions in cost. These items previously had to be produced by hand, an arduously slow and prohibitively expensive process which limited home ownership to the well-to-do. Suddenly, private one-family homes could be constructed at a fraction of the cost, making them affordable for almost anyone, not just the affluent. A new building method arose with the advent of affordable building materials called balloon framing. Balloon framing was the forerunner of today's stick framing method.

Stick framing used two-by-four inch studs positioned at sixteen inch intervals that were fastened together with factory-produced nails. The resultant frame was very strong and able to withstand heavy winds and snow accumulations since the stress was spread over a large number of studs. Stick framing, or 2x stud construction, is still widely used today in spite of our diminishing lumber resources.

America offered a seemingly endless supply of timber, and over the next century, residential home building became a thriving industry. Today, the vast forests have dwindled and been replaced by urban, suburban, and rural communities. Demand for wood products has increased world-wide as other countries flourish during their own industrial revolutions. As a result, we are faced with rising costs of building materials. Prices can fluctuate wildly due to many factors, including increased demand because of natural disasters like hurricanes and floods. Add to this the cost of energy needed to heat and cool new housing, and it is difficult to predict what the cost of building and owning a home will be in the future. All things considered, standard building methods are no longer as affordable as they once were.

There is a better way...

Murus SIPs combine structurally rated interior and exterior sheathing with a rigid, solid core of insulation in one composite panel. The sheathing is a structurally engineered oriented strand board (OSB) which is made from fast-growth trees harvested from managed plantations and self-regenerating woodlands. Murus SIPs are structural, so there is usually no need for a framework of wood or steel studs. Murus SIPs create a continuous whole-wall system with virtually no thermal bridging, breaks, or air infiltration as are present with wood or steel enclosure systems. The result is a tight building envelope that will contain the inside conditioned air, eliminate air infiltration and stratification, and result in significantly less heating and cooling fuel consumption and lower energy costs, while providing exceptional living comfort.

Murus SIPs offer superior R-values over conventional construction. R-value is defined as a measure of the capacity of a material, such as insulation, to resist heat flow, with increasing values indicating a greater capacity. The higher the R-value of a material, the greater its insulating capacity. Murus SIPs' R-values range from R-16 to R-57, depending upon the type of foam core and its thickness. Unlike fiberglass batt insulation, Murus foam cores do not sag, shift, settle or compress, or otherwise compromise the integrity of the original R-value rating.
