Murus SIPs and the Environment
Murus has always been concerned for our environment and natural resources. We are proud that our products help to insure the continued comfort of our customers without sacrificing the integrity of our environment.
Because of their ability to significantly reduce heating and cooling loads, Murus SIPs reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, saving our limited petroleum resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Murus SIPs are ideal for GREEN building projects as recognized by and listed in the Greenspec Directory, an independent agency specializing in qualifying GREEN construction products.
Polyurethane Foam
Murus Polyurethane foam is a mixture of two types of liquid plastic which are reacted to set by adding a chemical blowing agent. A blowing agent is any substance which is capable of producing a cellular structure in a plastic: in this case, the blowing agent causes the two liquid plastics to foam and expand to make a rigid polyurethane foam. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were an effective blowing agent until it was shown that CFCs have a deleterious effect on the ozone layer. As a result, CFCs have not been produced in or allowed into the U.S. since 1995.
Murus uses HFC 245fa as the blowing agent in our Polyurethane SIPs. HFC 245fa has a zero Ozone Depletion Probability (ODP) and is not considered a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), making Murus Polyurethane foam safe for humans and the environment.
EPS SIP Foam
The Murus EPS foam core is a rigid, foamed plastic with resilient closed cells. Some benefits to Murus EPS foam are its low thermal conductivity and high strength-to-weight ratio, and it does not support bacterial growth. Murus EPS SIP foam cores are recyclable, relieving the strain on our petroleum reserves through efficient reuse of scrap material.
OSB (Oriented Strand Board)
The OSB in Murus SIPs is made from fast-growing, renewable softwood and hardwood species such as pine, poplar, and aspen from self-regenerating forests or plantation-grown trees. Murus's OSB manufacturer is a member of the SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) and has pledged their dedication to preserving our forests. Concerned about formaldehyde emissions from OSB? There's no need to be. Read this technical report (pdf) from the Engineered Wood Association
No matter which type of foam core you choose, Murus Structural Insulated Panels strive to preserve our environment and protect our resources while giving you exceptional living comfort and energy savings.
